Could you teach me how to pray?
I would assume most people are too embarrassed to ask a question like this because they feel like they should know. However, even the disciples felt they needed to ask how to pray. In chapter 9 of Luke, the disciples are casting out demons and healing the sick. In chapter 11 of Luke they are asking Jesus how to pray. It almost seems backwards. We are not automatically educated in all things spiritual because we believe in Jesus. Sometimes we just don’t know and it is okay to ask someone. Knowledge is often the greatest weapon to fight insecurity, but if we are not careful we can allow pride to hinder our pursuit of knowledge and further compound our insecurities.
So, if you find yourself like the disciples wanting to know how to pray, or know anything else, don’t be afraid to ask.
Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.”
